Upcoming Exhibition February 8th, 2025

37 x 33 cm (group exhibition)
Yuan Art Museum, Caochangdi Art District, Beijing, China

The idea for this exhibition originated from a simple request made by two Italian collectors to curator Nikolaus Ellrodt. They were looking for portraits of a specific size. Zhou Tiehai created a piece measuring 37 x 33 cm, which later became the first small portrait in their collection. Inspired by the unique dimensions of this work, the two collectors continued over the years to commission artworks in the size of 37 x 33 cm from various artists—a size not typically found in an artist’s portfolio. These works, specifically created to this dimension, are custom pieces.

The curator thought it would make for a fascinating exhibition to invite a large group of artists to create works under two specific parameters: the dimensions of 37 cm high by 33 cm wide, and the subject being some form of portrait. The expression of the portrait and choice of medium were left entirely to the artists. Ensuring nearly equal participation of female and male artists was important to him, as well as including artists at all career stages—established, emerging, and even some very young artists. Some of these artists are self-taught and have little to no prior engagement with the art world.

There are only two parameters given to all participating artists: The work must be a portrait. The work must measure 37 cm high x 33 cm wide.

What the artists create and which medium they choose is entirely up to them.

Now, in February 2025, the “fourth” installment of this exhibition will take place at the Yuan Art Museum in Caochangdi, and I have been invited by Nikolaus Ellrodt to participate in this exhibition.
